PADUCAH, Ky. (WJPF) — Starting next Wednesday, the National Weather Service will begin sending severe weather alerts to cell phones.

The Wireless Emergency Alert will only be sent out for storms deemed “destructive.” According to the National Weather Service, that means the storms is likely to produce winds of at least 80 miles per hour or hailstones at least 2.75 inches in diameter.

The National Weather Service says on average, only about 10% of all severe thunderstorms in the country reach the destructive category each year.
