Another cleanup project finished at Kopppers site

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) — Another federal cleanup project at the old Koppers Wood Treating property in Carbondale has been completed.

According to the EPA, 34,000 tons of contaminated topsoil were removed from the 16 acre property. Trees and brush were also cleared from the property. New plants were put in their place with plans for more planting to happen this spring.

For nearly 90 years, the Koppers plant treated wood products like railroad ties and utility poles with chemicals now known to be highly toxic.
