Jury finds Carbondale man guilty

A Jackson County jury has found 49-year-old Alphonzo E. Higgins of Carbondale guilty of robbery following a two-day jury trial.

The state’s attorney’s office said shortly after midnight on Feb. 1, two Carbondale residents walked to an ATM on East Main Street to withdraw cash. Higgins and another male subject watched as they made the ATM transaction and then followed them to a Carbondale apartment building.

Higgins and his accomplice attacked the two victims and took cash from them as they attempted to get inside the building.

Higgins could be sentenced from 6 to 30 years to the Illinois Department of Corrections. The accomplice is awaiting trial.
