Prayer on the agenda for Saline County Board meeting

Should the Saline County Board pray before the start of their meetings? At least one county employee doesn’t think so.

In a letter sent to Board Chairman Jay Williams earlier this month, the American Humanist League cites complaints made by County Clerk employee Jeremy Stroud that each meeting of the board starts with an up to three minute Christian prayer. The prayer is led by board member Joe Jackson.

The letter states that having only Jackson lead a Christian prayer excludes all other non-Christian faiths.

The letter also alleges that when Stroud first went to county officials about his concern, he was told that prohibiting prayer would violate the religious rights of those who did participate.

The issue will be discussed, after prayer, during new business at the Saline County Board Meeting Thursday night.
