Carbondale man charged with threatening to blow up military recruiting office

A Jackson County man has been charged with making a false threat to blow up the Carbondale Military Recruiting Office.

42-year-old George Rita II, of Carbondale, made the threat on Friday.

A press release from the US District Attorney’s Office states that Rita made the anonymous threat to an FBI tip line in West Virginia. His threat claimed that someone was going to blow up an unspecified recruitment office and that no one could stop them.

FBI agents were able determine that the threat originated in Southern Illinois and tracked the internet connection used to Rita’s Carbondale Apartment, which sits not far from the recruiting office.

If convicted, Rita could face up to ten years in federal prison.
