A Carbondale man has been convicted on robbery charges after attempted to hold up a delivery driver in Carbondale.

According to the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office, 26-year-old Robert Williams was convicted of Attempted Aggravated Robbery following a two day trial.

In September of 2016, a delivery driver was sent to deliver food to the 400 block of Monroe Street. When the delivery driver arrived, a man waved him down, telling him to bring the food behind a building and he would pay him there. The driver became suspicious and left all his valuables in the car.

When the delivery driver walked towards the man, two other men appeared on bicycles and demanded the driver hand over all his money. One of the men had a handgun. The driver dropped the food and ran back to his car. While running he was hit in the back with a pellet. The three men then fled the scene.

A few hours later, all three suspects were arrested and identified by the victim. Robert Williams was found with a pellet gun tucked into the waistband of his pants.

One of the other two men pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three years in prison.

Williams will face sentencing at a late date. The third person involved was a juvenile.
